About the American Civil War
The American Civil War (1861–1865) was fought between the United States and eleven Southern states that seceded to form the Confederacy, chiefly to preserve slavery. Union victory restored national authority over the seceded states and led to the abolition of slavery through the Thirteenth Amendment.
Geography of the American Civil War
Most fighting occurred in the eastern and southern United States, with major campaigns in Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Mississippi River valley. The war also reached border states, the trans-Mississippi West, and Southern coastal waters. Washington and Richmond anchored the eastern theater, while rivers, railroads, and ports linked armies with their supplies. Control of the Mississippi divided Confederate territory, and the Union naval blockade restricted access to overseas trade.
