Fort Clinch survives as a largely intact brick and masonry coastal fortification, with restored bastions, gun rooms, and living quarters open for viewing. It is owned and managed by the State of Florida as part of Fort Clinch State Park. The fort is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with areas accessible through self-guided and guided tours.
About Fort Clinch State Park
Fort Clinch was built from 1847 as part of the United States' Third System of coastal defenses, guarding the St. Marys River entrance on Amelia Island, Florida. Confederate troops occupied the unfinished fort early in the Civil War before Union forces retook and held it from 1862. It was garrisoned again briefly during the Spanish-American War.
