HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park.
The park preserves the substantial limestone and coquina walls of a nineteenth century sugar mill, along with cast iron gears, kettles, and other original milling machinery left in place among the ruins. It is owned and operated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Division of Recreation and Parks as a State Historic Park. The ruins stand in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors at no charge.
About Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park
Florida senator David Levy Yulee built a sugar mill on his plantation near Homosassa in the 1850s to process cane grown and harvested by enslaved workers. Steam-powered machinery crushed the cane and boiled its juice into raw sugar for regional markets. Union forces raided and burned the plantation during the Civil War, ending its operation.
