The original Fort Bliss was established in 1854 to protect the growing El Paso area, secure the Rio Grande trade corridor and immigration route along the old Camino Real, and support military operations against raiding parties in the region. In its early decades the post functioned as a small frontier garrison whose location shifted several times, moving among sites in and near downtown El Paso, including a period near Hart's Mill, before Reconstruction-era abandonment and later reestablishment; these relocations reflected flooding, land disputes, and changing strategic needs rather than a single fixed installation. The post's everyday function during this era was routine frontier patrol, escort of travelers and supply trains, and logistics support rather than large engagements. Today the modern Fort Bliss is a major active-duty U.S. Army installation headquartered well outside the original downtown location, still functioning as a working military post, home to armored and air defense units. The founding site itself is commemorated with a historical marker in downtown El Paso, while the post's early history is interpreted at the Fort Bliss museum, sometimes called the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss Museum, on the current installation, so the original site now functions primarily as a marked historical location and subject of exhibit interpretation rather than an operating military footprint.
