The Treue der Union Monument functions as a war-grave memorial rather than a marker of a battlefield or building. It stands over the actual burial vault containing the remains of the German Texan Unionists killed in the August 1862 Battle of the Nueces and in a follow-up killing of escaping survivors that October. The dead, gathered from the Nueces River site and reinterred at Comfort, were placed beneath the monument grounds, making the site simultaneously a cemetery and a commemorative shrine. Dedicated in 1866 by the local German community, the obelisk was built explicitly to honor Unionist loyalty in a Confederate state and to keep a physical, permanent record of names and losses at a time when public mourning for Union dead was politically fraught in Texas. It has functioned ever since as a site of civic remembrance: a thirty-six star United States flag is flown at half-staff there year-round, and the town holds an annual commemorative service on the anniversary of the battle. Today the monument continues to serve this same memorial and educational role rather than any residential, commercial, or governmental use. It anchors Comfort's small historic downtown, drawing visitors and school groups, and is maintained as a protected historic and burial site. It is recognized as the only monument of its kind in the former Confederacy: a German-language Union memorial standing directly above the graves of the people it honors.
