HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Pickens (Gulf Islands National Seashore).
Fort Pickens survives as a substantial brick fortification, including its outer walls, bastions, and vaulted casemates, along with later concrete gun batteries built within its perimeter, though an 1899 explosion destroyed part of its northeast bastion. It is administered by the National Park Service as part of Gulf Islands National Seashore. The fort is open to the public for both self-guided and ranger-led tours.
About Fort Pickens (Gulf Islands National Seashore)
The United States Army built Fort Pickens between 1829 and 1834 to defend Pensacola Bay as part of a coastal fortification system. Union forces held the fort throughout the Civil War, denying the Confederacy control of the harbor. In the 1880s, the fort held the Apache leader Geronimo and other prisoners under military guard.
