HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park.
The fort preserves its brick casemates, gun rooms, and one of the largest collections of Civil War-era Rodman and Parrott cannon in the United States, with the upper tier reduced during later modifications rather than fully intact. It is managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as a state park. The fort and its beach grounds are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park
The United States Army built Fort Zachary Taylor at Key West in the 1840s and 1850s as a coastal defense fortification guarding the southern approach to Florida. During the Civil War it remained in Union hands and helped enforce the naval blockade of Confederate shipping despite Florida's secession. It continued in coastal defense use into the twentieth century.
