HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site.
The site preserves a collection of nineteenth and early twentieth century farm buildings, including the plantation house, barn, cotton gin house, blacksmith shop, and other outbuildings, largely original to the family farm. It is managed by Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, part of the state Department of Natural Resources. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site
John Fitz Jarrell established this cotton plantation in Jones County, Georgia, in the 1840s using enslaved labor. His family retained and worked the property through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and into the twentieth century, adapting to new agricultural technology. The site illustrates a Georgia plantation's transition from slave labor to a self-sufficient family farm.
