HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Old Fort Jackson.
The brick ramparts, moat, powder magazine, and vaulted casemates of the star-shaped fort survive largely intact, with portions restored over time. It is a National Historic Landmark owned by the State of Georgia and operated by the Coastal Heritage Society. The fort is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Old Fort Jackson
Old Fort Jackson was built by the United States government in the early nineteenth century to defend the Savannah River approach to Savannah, Georgia. It saw service during the War of 1812 and was later held and expanded by Confederate forces during the Civil War. The fort formed part of the coastal defense system protecting a major southern port.
