The original 1838 Greek Revival mansion survives largely intact, including its domed rotunda, cantilevered staircase, and principal reception rooms furnished with period antiques. It is owned by Georgia College and State University and is listed as a National Historic Landmark. The house operates as a historic house museum open to the public through guided tours.
About Old Governor's Mansion
The State of Georgia built this Greek Revival mansion in Milledgeville in 1838 to serve as the official residence of its governors while Milledgeville was the state capital. Union troops under General Sherman occupied the building during the March to the Sea in 1864. The mansion later became part of a state college.
