HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Confederate Naval Museum.
The museum preserves the excavated hull remains of the Confederate ironclad CSS Jackson and the gunboat CSS Chattahoochee, along with associated artifacts and ship fittings, displayed under cover rather than as reconstructed, seaworthy vessels. It is operated by the city of Columbus, Georgia, as a municipal museum. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Confederate Naval Museum
During the Civil War, the Confederate States Navy operated a shipyard and naval iron works at Columbus, Georgia, building ironclad and wooden warships including the CSS Chattahoochee and CSS Jackson. Union cavalry burned the yard and its unfinished vessels in 1865. The recovered ship remains later formed the core of a museum of the Confederacy's river navy.
