HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Green-Meldrim House.
The Gothic Revival mansion survives largely intact, including its ironwork balconies, oriel windows, and cast iron detailing, along with much of its original interior woodwork and marble mantels. It is owned by St. John's Episcopal Church, Savannah, and serves as the church's parish house, and it holds a National Historic Landmark designation. The house is open to the public on a limited schedule for guided tours.
About Green-Meldrim House
The Green-Meldrim House was built in the 1850s as a Gothic Revival mansion for cotton merchant Charles Green. General William Tecumseh Sherman used it as his headquarters after capturing Savannah in December 1864. The house later passed to the Meldrim family and then served as the parish house of St. John's Episcopal Church.
