Eatonville retains its original town plan and a number of historic residential and civic buildings within one of the oldest incorporated African American municipalities in the United States. The town is self governed by its own municipal government, with preservation efforts supported by the Association to Preserve the Eatonville Community. It remains a living town, freely accessible to visitors, with the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts open to the public.
About Eatonville Historic Town
Eatonville was incorporated in 1887 by formerly enslaved African Americans, making it one of the first self-governing Black municipalities in the United States. It became the childhood home of writer Zora Neale Hurston, who drew on its community life in her fiction and folklore. The town stood as an early model of Black self-determination in the post-Civil War South.
