HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fort San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park.
The site preserves the stone foundations and lower walls of a Spanish colonial fort, built atop and reusing earlier fortification remains, along with a small on site museum, rather than any substantial upstanding structure. It is administered by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as a state park and historic site. The grounds and museum are open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Fort San Marcos de Apalache Historic State Park
Spanish forces built a wooden fort where the Wakulla and St. Marks rivers meet in 1679 to guard the mission province of Apalachee, replacing it in stone. Control of the site passed between Spain, Britain, and Confederate forces over the following two centuries. It served as a Spanish garrison, a British post, and a Confederate arsenal before being abandoned.
