About the Indian Wars
The Indian Wars is a collective term for numerous conflicts between Indigenous nations and European colonial or U.S. forces from the early seventeenth to the early twentieth century. These separate wars concerned land, sovereignty, settlement, trade, and the enforcement or violation of treaties. Expansion by colonial and U.S. governments resulted in extensive dispossession, forced removal, and confinement of Indigenous peoples to reservations.
Geography of the Indian Wars
The conflicts occurred across North America, especially within the present-day United States and neighboring borderlands. Early theaters included the Northeast, the Southeast, and the Great Lakes, while later campaigns spread across the Great Plains, the Southwest, California, and the Pacific Northwest. Forests, prairies, deserts, and mountains supported different forms of resistance and military campaigning. Forts, river routes, settler communities, and later railroads connected expanding fronts across Indigenous homelands.
