About Fort Pena Colorada (Red Rock)
Fort Pena Colorada was established in 1880 near Marathon, Texas, to help prevent Indian raids across the border into Mexico. Apache raiders attacked the post in 1881, reflecting the ongoing conflict along this stretch of the frontier. The fort was abandoned in 1893 once West Texas had been permanently cleared of Indian resistance.
