HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Micanopy Historic District.

The Micanopy Historic District preserves a collection of nineteenth century commercial buildings and residences along its main street and surrounding blocks, largely in original form with ordinary maintenance rather than reconstruction. It is recognized as a National Register Historic District, with individual buildings privately owned. The district is freely accessible as a living town, with its streets and building exteriors open to the public and some shops and businesses open to visitors.

About Micanopy Historic District

Settlers established Micanopy in the early nineteenth century near a former Seminole town, making it one of the oldest inland settlements in Florida. It was named for the Seminole chief Micanopy and lay close to fighting during the Second Seminole War in the 1830s. The town grew as a farming and trading center in north central Florida.
