About Site of Fort Stockton
Fort Stockton was established on the Comanche Trail on March 23, 1859, to protect the San Antonio-San Diego mail route, and named for Commodore Robert Field Stockton. It served as a stage stand on the San Diego Line between 1858 and 1861. Federal troops evacuated the post during the Civil War, reoccupied it in 1867, and abandoned it in 1886.
HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Site of Fort Stockton
Established on the Comanche Trail March 23, 1859, as a protection to the San Antonio-San Diego mail route. Named in honor of Commodore Robert Field Stockton, 1795-1866, who captured California for the United States. A stage stand on the San Diego Line, 1858-1861.
