Fort Stockton functioned as a U.S. Army post established in 1858-59 to protect travelers, mail carriers, and freighters along the San Antonio-El Paso road and the Butterfield Overland Mail route, positioned at Comanche Springs, a major water source at the crossing of several important war and trade trails. Garrisoned intermittently before and after the Civil War, the post was rebuilt in 1867 for the Ninth U.S. Cavalry, a segregated Black regiment whose troopers conducted patrols, escorts, and scouting missions primarily against Apache raiders, helping secure the surrounding region for settlement. The fort's presence created a market and source of employment for stockmen, irrigation farmers, merchants, freighters, and laborers, and the adjoining civilian settlement grew into a ranching and agricultural community that took the fort's name. The Army abandoned the post in 1886 as the frontier receded, but several original buildings, including officers' quarters, guardhouse, and barracks, survived because they continued to be used as private residences and civic buildings by the town that grew up around them. Today those surviving structures form the Fort Stockton Historic District, preserved and operated as a historic site and museum complex within the modern city of Fort Stockton, offering visitors a look at frontier military garrison life alongside the community's ranching and agricultural heritage.
