About Council House Fight Site
Peace negotiations between Republic of Texas officials and Comanche chiefs collapsed into violence at the San Antonio courthouse on March 19, 1840, when Texan soldiers attempted to hold the chiefs hostage over the fate of captives not returned as promised, resulting in dozens of deaths on both sides. The episode poisoned Texan-Comanche relations for years and triggered a large Comanche retaliatory raid on Victoria and Linnville later that year.
