About DeWitt Colony Townsite Marker

James Kerr selected this Guadalupe–San Marcos river junction in 1825 as the capital of Green DeWitt's colony. Gonzales served as its land office, administrative center, and trading place, where colonists registered claims and handled local affairs. In October 1835, residents refused to surrender a cannon to Mexican troops, making the town a flashpoint of the Texas Revolution. It was evacuated and burned during the Runaway Scrape before later rebuilding.

The colony's founding is marked by markers in Gonzales, whose historic town square remains the county seat.

History happened here at DeWitt Colony Townsite Marker

Empresario Green DeWitt founded Gonzales in 1825 as the capital of his colony, one of the earliest Anglo-American settlements authorized by the Mexican government after Austin's original grant. The town's frontier position made it a frequent target of Comanche raids and, a decade later, the flashpoint of the Texas Revolution.
