About the Spanish Conquest of the Americas
The Spanish Conquest of the Americas (1492–1572) encompassed multiple campaigns through which Spain established colonial rule over Indigenous societies in the Caribbean and large parts of the American mainland. Spanish forces relied on Indigenous allies as well as military violence, while introduced diseases devastated populations. Major milestones included the defeats of the Mexica and Inca states and the fall of the last Inca stronghold at Vilcabamba.
Geography of the Spanish Conquest of the Americas
Spanish expansion began in the Caribbean, especially Hispaniola and Cuba, before reaching the mainland. Major campaigns took place in central Mexico, Central America, and the Andean region of present-day Peru and neighboring countries. Coastal landing sites and Indigenous roads connected expeditions with inland cities such as Tenochtitlan and Cusco. Tropical forests, high mountains, deserts, and immense distances produced very different conditions across these separate conquests.
