About Ysleta Mission (Corpus Christi de la Ysleta del Sur)

Founded after the 1680 Pueblo Revolt, Ysleta Mission became the worship center of the Tigua community and later the wider El Paso Valley. Generations gathered there for Mass, baptisms, marriages, and funerals. Floods forced repeated rebuilding, so today's adobe church is not the original 1682 structure. A mission school educated Tigua children from 1918 to 2005. The historic mission remains in religious use for special services and ceremonies.

Rebuilt after fires and floods over the centuries, the mission continues as an active Catholic parish church in El Paso's Lower Valley.

History happened here at Ysleta Mission (Corpus Christi de la Ysleta del Sur)

Founded in 1682 by Spanish colonists and Tigua refugees fleeing the Pueblo Revolt in New Mexico, Ysleta Mission is regarded as the oldest continuously active parish in Texas. It anchors the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo community, whose members trace direct descent from the mission's founders.
