HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Pátzcuaro Historic Centre.

The site preserves its colonial-era grid of streets lined with whitewashed, red-tile-roofed adobe and timber buildings around the Plaza Vasco de Quiroga and the Basilica of Our Lady of Health, largely intact rather than reconstructed. It falls under Mexican federal and municipal heritage protection as a designated historic monument zone. The town center is freely accessible as a living urban area, with the basilica open as an active place of worship.

About Pátzcuaro Historic Centre

Pátzcuaro served as a ceremonial center of the Purépecha kingdom before the Spanish conquest and became a Spanish colonial town in the sixteenth century. Bishop Vasco de Quiroga made it the seat of the diocese of Michoacán and organized indigenous communities around crafts, agriculture, and Christian instruction. The town remained a center of colonial administration and indigenous culture.
