HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Zempoala (Cempoala) Archaeological Zone.

The archaeological zone preserves the stone platform bases of temple and ceremonial structures, including the Templo Mayor and Templo de las Chimeneas, along with sections of a defensive wall, with the upper superstructures largely lost and the visible remains consisting of consolidated stone foundations rather than complete original buildings. It is managed by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia. The site is open to the public as a ticketed archaeological park.

About Zempoala (Cempoala) Archaeological Zone

Zempoala was the capital of the Totonac people, a fortified city that flourished in the fifteenth century before falling under Aztec tribute domination. It gained prominence in 1519 as the first major indigenous city where Hernán Cortés formed an alliance with the Totonac against the Aztec Empire. Its plastered stone platforms reflected a distinct Totonac style.
