HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Popayán Historic Centre.
Popayán's historic center preserves an extensive ensemble of whitewashed colonial era churches, houses, and the arcaded main square, largely rebuilt or reinforced following twentieth century earthquake damage while retaining its historic colonial urban plan and facades. It falls under Colombian national heritage protection with individual monuments variously in municipal, church, and private ownership. The historic center is freely accessible as a living city, with churches and some buildings open to visitors.
About Popayán Historic Centre
The Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar founded Popayán in 1537 as a colonial administrative center linking Quito to the northern viceregal capitals. It grew into an important seat of Spanish government, commerce, and Catholic religious life in the southern Andes. The city became known for its Holy Week processions, a tradition maintained since the sixteenth century.
