HISTORIC PRESERVATION at San Cristóbal de las Casas Historic Centre.

Colonial era churches, including the cathedral and the Santo Domingo church, along with colonnaded colonial houses and a largely intact colonial street grid, survive in the historic center. Protected buildings fall under the oversight of Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, with the town itself governed by its municipality. The center is freely accessible, and its churches remain active places of worship open to visitors.

About San Cristóbal de las Casas Historic Centre

Spanish colonists founded the settlement in 1528 under conquistador Diego de Mazariegos as an administrative center for the Chiapas highlands. It became seat of a Dominican bishopric later named for the friar Bartolomé de las Casas, who advocated for indigenous rights. The town served as a colonial hub for trade, governance, and evangelization in southern Mexico.
