The cathedral preserves its Baroque facade and towers along with a largely rebuilt interior following repeated earthquake damage, incorporating older elements including choir stalls and chapels with colonial-era artwork. It is owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lima as the metropolitan cathedral. It functions as an active place of worship that is also open to visitors on a ticketed basis for the museum and crypt areas.
About Cathedral of Lima
The Cathedral of Lima was founded in the sixteenth century, traditionally with Francisco Pizarro laying its first stone, as seat of the Archbishop of Lima. Earthquakes repeatedly damaged the building over the following centuries, requiring extensive rebuilding. It served as the principal Roman Catholic cathedral of colonial Peru and a center of ecclesiastical authority in Spanish South America.
