About Yorktown - Surrender Field
On October 19, 1781, British troops marched onto this field and surrendered to the allied American and French army. The ceremony ended the siege of Yorktown and effectively broke Britain’s ability to continue major offensive operations, making the site a defining landscape of American victory.
NPS preserves Surrender Field within Yorktown Battlefield. Its visitor route leads to an overlook and interpretive pavilion, with a short trail explaining the 1781 surrender. These later visitor facilities overlook the historic field; they are not surviving surrender structures. NPS manages the grounds within Colonial National Historical Park.
