About the Wars of the Roses
The Wars of the Roses (1455–1487) were a series of English civil wars involving rival branches of the royal House of Plantagenet, Lancaster and York, and their supporters. Disputes over succession and noble power repeatedly changed the monarchy, before Henry Tudor's victory and the defeat of a later Yorkist challenge established the Tudor dynasty.
Geography of the Wars of the Roses
The principal battles took place across England, from St Albans near London to Towton in Yorkshire, and from Barnet and Tewkesbury to Bosworth and Stoke. London, royal castles, and regional noble estates provided centers of authority and recruitment. Wales and the English Channel also mattered as routes for armies and claimants returning from exile. Roads, river crossings, and access to regional strongholds influenced campaigns that moved between southern England, the Midlands, and the north.
