Leicester Cathedral preserves its medieval core beneath extensive Victorian restoration and enlargement, while the adjoining former Greyfriars site retains no standing medieval friary structure, having been redeveloped over the centuries after the friary's dissolution. The cathedral is the seat of the Church of England's Diocese of Leicester, and the Greyfriars site includes a heritage garden and visitor center. The cathedral is open to the public and the Greyfriars visitor facilities are open on a ticketed basis.
About Leicester Cathedral & Greyfriars, Leicester
Leicester's Greyfriars was a medieval Franciscan friary where the body of Richard III was buried following his death at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, later suppressed under Henry VIII. The parish church of St Martin became Leicester Cathedral in 1927. Richard III's remains, located beneath a later car park, were reinterred in the cathedral in 2015.
