HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Fotheringhay Castle, Northamptonshire.
Almost nothing survives above ground beyond an overgrown motte, fragments of masonry, and low earthworks marking the ditch and bailey, the castle having been largely demolished in the seventeenth century. The site lies on private farmland with no dedicated managing body beyond general protection as a scheduled monument. Public access is limited to viewing the mound and information panels from the adjoining public land.
About Fotheringhay Castle, Northamptonshire
Fotheringhay Castle was built by Norman lords in the twelfth century on the River Nene to guard the surrounding lands. It later passed to the House of York and became the birthplace of Richard III in 1452. Mary, Queen of Scots was tried and executed there in 1587, making it a pivotal site in Tudor political history.
