About the Cold War

The Cold War (1947–1991) was a global political, ideological, and military rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union and their allies. It involved nuclear competition, espionage, economic pressure, and numerous regional wars, while the two superpowers avoided a direct full-scale war against each other. The rivalry ended as communist governments fell in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union dissolved.

Geography of the Cold War

The Cold War had a worldwide reach, with its central European divide running through Germany and the city of Berlin. Armed conflicts and interventions occurred in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Africa, and Latin America, often combining local struggles with superpower competition. Cuba and the Caribbean became a major nuclear flashpoint, while military bases and naval patrols extended across the world's oceans. Geography shaped alliances, defensive frontiers, missile deployments, and access to strategic resources.
