The building now called the Harry S. Truman Little White House was constructed in 1890 as officers' quarters at the United States naval station in Key West. Its broad porches, timber framing, and raised tropical design served naval commandants and paymasters in a strategically important Gulf and Caribbean base. The house supported official activity during the Spanish-American War and both world wars, and Thomas Edison stayed there while assisting naval research in 1918. Its presidential association therefore grew from an existing military residence rather than a retreat built for Truman.

Harry S. Truman first came in November 1946, when exhaustion and health concerns encouraged a working vacation in Key West. He returned ten more times during his presidency, spending 175 days at the house. Staff installed secure communications, office equipment, and temporary facilities, yet Truman also swam, fished, played poker, and received friends. Cabinet members, military leaders, and advisers joined him as decisions involving postwar demobilization, the Marshall Plan, recognition of Israel, civil rights, the early Cold War, and Korea occupied his administration.

The Key West visits blended informality with executive power. Truman signed documents, held meetings, and conducted official correspondence, giving the naval quarters its Little White House identity. His 1948 civil-rights order desegregating the armed forces was issued in Washington, but conversations and drafting connected with the administration's program occurred during the Key West period. Later presidents and officials also used the compound: Dwight Eisenhower recuperated there after a heart attack, John Kennedy visited, and Jimmy Carter held discussions on international affairs. These episodes added layers without displacing Truman's central association.

The house retains substantial 1890 structure and many spaces used by Truman, but it is a restored museum rather than an untouched presidential office. The Navy altered the building before and after his visits; furnishings were dispersed, returned, donated, or placed according to documentation; and climate, fire, security, accessibility, and visitor systems are modern. Restoration after federal disposal recovered a mid-century appearance while preserving earlier naval fabric where possible. Exhibited automobiles, documents, furniture, and personal objects vary in their direct connection to the exact room or visit being interpreted.

Florida owns the historic site, and museum operations and preservation involve state and nonprofit partners within Key West's former naval station. Access is generally through guided tours, with schedules affected by events, weather, and conservation. Interpretation should distinguish the building's naval origins, Truman's working visits, later presidential use, and modern museum reconstruction. The site illuminates how executive business could move beyond Washington, but it should not imply that every displayed object witnessed a major decision. Its authenticity lies in the original residence, documented presidential occupation, and carefully acknowledged restoration.
