The neoclassical palace survives largely intact, having been substantially rebuilt after twentieth-century bombardment damage, and retains its original facade, courtyards, and state reception rooms. It serves as the seat of the President of Chile and is administered by the Chilean government. Public access is limited to guided tours, while the surrounding plazas remain freely open.
About Palacio de La Moneda
Spanish colonial authorities built the Palacio de la Moneda in Santiago in the late eighteenth century as the royal mint, designed by architect Joaquin Toesca. It produced coinage for the Captaincy General of Chile before Chile's independence in the early nineteenth century. It was later converted into the seat of the Chilean government.
