The fort preserves its perimeter walls, bastions, powder magazine, and cannon emplacements overlooking the harbor, built by the British as a coastal defense work. It is maintained by Trinidad and Tobago's national heritage authorities as a protected historic site. The grounds are freely accessible as a public park and overlook point.
About Fort George
Fort George was built in 1804 under the British colonial governor Thomas Hislop as a coastal battery and signal station overlooking Port of Spain. Enslaved laborers constructed its lookout tower and gun emplacements to warn of a feared French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. It formed part of Trinidad's early nineteenth century coastal defense network.
