About the Anglo-Saxon Wars

Anglo-Saxon Wars is a collective term for the conflicts that shaped England from the end of Roman rule around 410 to the invasions of 1066. They included struggles involving Britons and Anglo-Saxon settlers, rivalry among emerging kingdoms, and resistance to Scandinavian invasions and rule. Successive conquests and political consolidation helped create the English kingdom before its defeat by the Normans.

Geography of the Anglo-Saxon Wars

The conflicts took place across present-day England and neighboring British borderlands, involving kingdoms such as Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria. Major areas of contest included the Thames valley, the Midlands, Yorkshire, and the eastern districts later associated with the Danelaw. Coastal landings and navigable rivers carried Scandinavian forces inland, while towns and fortified settlements supported defense. The campaigns of 1066 moved between northern England and the Sussex coast, reflecting threats from several directions.
