No structures survive from the battle itself, the site instead identified with the tidal causeway linking Northey Island to the Essex mainland near Maldon, commemorated by a bronze statue of the Anglo-Saxon ealdorman Byrhtnoth in the town. Northey Island is owned by the National Trust, while the town monument stands on public land maintained by the local council. The causeway and island approach lie in open countryside, though the island itself has restricted access due to tides and nature conservation.
About Battle of Maldon Site, Essex
The Battle of Maldon was fought in 991 near the River Blackwater in Essex, where Anglo-Saxon forces under ealdorman Byrhtnoth met a Viking raiding fleet. Byrhtnoth was killed and his army defeated, a loss said to have encouraged the payment of tribute, or Danegeld, to Viking raiders. The battle became famous through the Old English poem The Battle of Maldon.
