What survives is an earthen bank and ditch running intermittently for many miles along the England-Wales border, with the best-preserved sections retaining their original earthwork profile rather than any built structure. Individual stretches are scheduled monuments protected by Cadw in Wales and Historic England in England, with the associated long-distance path maintained by local authorities and the Offa's Dyke Association. The dyke and its adjoining trail lie in open countryside and are freely accessible on foot.
About Offa's Dyke, along the Welsh Marches
King Offa of Mercia ordered a great linear earthwork built in the later eighth century to mark the boundary between his kingdom and the Welsh kingdoms to the west. Laborers dug a ditch and raised an adjoining bank running for scores of miles along the Welsh Marches. It served as a political boundary and defensive barrier between England and Wales.
