Little survives of the original Anglo-Saxon fort or the later Athelney Abbey beyond low earthworks and buried foundations, the site now marked chiefly by a nineteenth-century commemorative obelisk that stands where the abbey and fort are traditionally believed to have stood. The monument and surrounding field are in local or private ownership, with the site recognized as a scheduled monument. The obelisk can be viewed from nearby land, though the site itself is not developed for visitors.
About Athelney, Somerset
Athelney, an island amid the Somerset marshes, sheltered King Alfred the Great in 878 when Viking forces overran much of Wessex. From this refuge he regrouped his army before defeating the Danes at the Battle of Edington, a retreat later associated with the legend of the burned cakes. In thanksgiving, Alfred founded Athelney Abbey there, marking Wessex's survival.
