About the War of 1812
The War of 1812 (1812–1815) was fought between the United States and Britain and their allies over maritime restrictions, the impressment of sailors, and conflicts on the North American frontier. Indigenous nations also fought to defend their lands and political independence. The Treaty of Ghent ended the war without major border changes, but the conflict severely weakened Native resistance in several regions.
Geography of the War of 1812
The principal land and naval campaigns took place along the U.S.–Canadian border, especially around the Great Lakes, the Niagara frontier, and the Saint Lawrence approaches. Other theaters included the Chesapeake Bay, Washington, Baltimore, the southeastern United States, and New Orleans. Ships also fought in the Atlantic and farther afield. Control of lakes, river mouths, ports, and long supply routes shaped operations across the northern frontier and coastal regions.
