About the Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) began with a military uprising against Spain's elected Republican government and became a struggle between Republican forces and Nationalist rebels led by Francisco Franco. Political, social, and religious divisions combined with extensive foreign intervention. Nationalist victory established Franco's dictatorship and brought severe repression of defeated opponents.
Geography of the Spanish Civil War
The war was fought throughout Spain, with major fronts around Madrid, in the northern industrial regions, along the Ebro River, and across Catalonia. The conflict also involved Spanish Morocco and island territories, while troops crossed from North Africa to the peninsula. Cities such as Barcelona, Bilbao, and Guernica became major targets or symbols of the fighting. Mountain ranges, railway corridors, Mediterranean ports, and the French border influenced supply and territorial control.
