HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Sigüenza Cathedral.

The cathedral preserves its Romanesque-to-Gothic fortress-like structure substantially intact, including its cloister, chapels, and the alabaster tomb effigy known as El Doncel, though portions suffered damage during the Spanish Civil War and were later restored. It remains an active cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sigüenza-Guadalajara. It is open to the public, with the main church freely accessible and certain chapels and the museum open on a ticketed basis.

About Sigüenza Cathedral

Sigüenza Cathedral was begun in the twelfth century under the Diocese of Sigüenza, combining Romanesque and early Gothic styles with a fortress-like appearance reflecting the era of the Reconquista. Construction continued over several centuries, adding Gothic and Renaissance chapels. The cathedral served as the seat of the bishop of Sigüenza and a center of religious life in Castile.
