HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Alcázar of Toledo.

The stone fortress is substantially a mid twentieth century reconstruction of the medieval and Renaissance Alcázar, whose earlier fabric was largely destroyed during the 1936 siege of the Spanish Civil War. It is in Spanish state ownership and houses the Museo del Ejército, the national army museum, along with a regional public library. The building is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Alcázar of Toledo

Successive fortresses stood on this hilltop above Toledo from Roman times through Visigothic and Moorish rule, until Christian kings took it during the Reconquista. Emperor Charles V rebuilt the structure in the sixteenth century as a royal residence overlooking the Tagus River. The Alcázar served afterward as a royal palace and then as a military academy.
