About the Spanish-American War

The Spanish-American War of 1898 was fought between the United States and Spain amid Cuba's struggle for independence and growing U.S. intervention. U.S. victories ended Spanish colonial rule in Cuba and led to the transfer of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the United States. The settlement expanded U.S. overseas power and was followed by further conflict in the Philippines.

Geography of the Spanish-American War

The main fighting occurred in Cuba and the Philippines, with additional operations in Puerto Rico and the seizure of Guam. Cuban campaigns centered on Santiago and nearby land positions, while the naval Battle of Manila Bay opened the Philippine theater. These fronts were separated by the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and depended on fleets, ports, and long-distance supply. Tropical conditions, coastal defenses, and difficult inland terrain shaped the land campaigns.
