Built in 1859 beside the Alamo by William Menger, this hotel hosted a roster of prominent 19th-century guests including Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant, and its bar is famously where Theodore Roosevelt recruited volunteers for the Rough Riders in 1898. It is among the oldest continuously operating hotels west of the Mississippi.
