About the Napoleonic Wars
The Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815) were a series of conflicts between Napoleon's France and changing coalitions of European powers. French victories spread imperial control and political reorganization across much of Europe, but sustained resistance and failed campaigns weakened Napoleon's position. His final defeat at Waterloo led to a negotiated restoration of the European balance of power.
Geography of the Napoleonic Wars
The principal campaigns extended across western, central, and eastern Europe, including France, Germany, Italy, the Iberian Peninsula, and Russia. Major theaters included the Peninsular War in Spain and Portugal and the long French advance toward Moscow in 1812. Naval fighting and attacks on colonial possessions extended the conflict into the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Indian Ocean. Rivers, mountain passes, road systems, and the difficulty of supplying large armies shaped the campaigns.
