HISTORIC PRESERVATION at James Joyce Tower & Museum (Martello Tower).
The squat stone Martello tower, built in the early nineteenth century as a coastal defense work, survives intact along with its gun platform and the adjoining museum displays inside. It is owned by the local county council and maintained with the help of a voluntary trust dedicated to the site. The tower is open to the public on a seasonal basis.
About James Joyce Tower & Museum (Martello Tower)
British forces built this martello tower at Sandycove in 1804 to defend the coast against a feared Napoleonic invasion. Writer James Joyce stayed there briefly in 1904 as a guest of Oliver St John Gogarty, an experience that inspired the opening chapter of his novel Ulysses. The tower became a landmark of Irish literary history.
