About the Latin American Wars of Independence
The Latin American Wars of Independence (1808–1833) were separate conflicts through which much of Spanish America, and Brazil under Portuguese rule, gained independence. Imperial crises in Europe interacted with local struggles over sovereignty, political representation, and social power. Victories established new states, but regional divisions and disputes over their governments continued after colonial rule ended.
Geography of the Latin American Wars of Independence
The wars spread across Mexico, Central America, northern and southern South America, and parts of Brazil. Major campaigns linked Venezuela and New Granada with the Andes and Pacific coast, while other armies crossed from the Río de la Plata region into Chile and Peru. Mexico's highlands, the Venezuelan plains, Andean passes, and coastal ports presented very different military conditions. Rivers and ocean routes connected distant regions, while mountains and long distances complicated coordination among independence movements.
