HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Alhóndiga de Granaditas.

The building survives as a large stone granary with a central courtyard and arcaded galleries, largely intact from its original construction. It is administered by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History, houses a regional museum, and lies within the Guanajuato historic town World Heritage Site. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Alhóndiga de Granaditas

Spanish colonial authorities built the Alhóndiga de Granaditas in Guanajuato in the late eighteenth century as a public granary and grain exchange for the city's silver-mining region. In 1810, Miguel Hidalgo's insurgent forces stormed the royalist-held building in an early, bloody battle of the Mexican War of Independence. It became a symbol of the independence movement.
